Merlot wine used as a blend vs. 100% varietal
by: Melina

Merlot's popularity as a promoted 100% varietal began here in the United States, very early in California's wine making history.

This was likely done due to Merlot's high drinkability (strong body yet rounded, soft tannins) and its relative adaptability to various climates and soils. The name Merlot was also easily pronounced and embraced by American wine drinkers, which early in a new wine market, can make a big difference as well.

Traditionally, Merlot has been used in Bordeaux blends in France for centuries. France has over two-thirds of the world's plantings of Merlot, and it typically constitutes just around 25% of traditional blends.

Just across the southern border however, Italy did in fact plant Merlot as a stand-alone varietal, along with using it to lower the high acidity of other Italian wine varietals, and most notably as a blend with Sangiovese and other Tuscan wines. However, it never reached the same popularity and promotion as Merlot has enjoyed post California's Merlot boom.

Then in the 1980's, Merlot travelled up the West Coast to find a new hot spot in Washington State, which has since produced excellent Merlot wines as well.

Since then, Merlot has been evolving and growing with the international wine market - though it did experience a noticeable dip in global sales after the famous "Sideways" movie comment.

Despite that, Merlot has a stable place on the wine shelves and is in fact making a come back.

Hope this helps! Cheers! :-)
